Well it turns out that I wasn't the only one getting annoyed at the torrent of stupid op-eds posted to COLlive. Chana took it upon herself to introduce some uncommon sense into the community by writing the most sensible article ever: "Pretend There Weren’t Any Shadchanim…" In this article, Chana talks about a utopia in which all shadchanim have been exterminated. People are all of a sudden required to think and do things for themselves. I'm sure this concept has a lot of sheep clutching their pearls in horror.
Chana's clearly logical reasoning behind firing the shadchanim is that the vast majority of the time, they don't really know either of the people they are setting up and are really just making stuff up. These shadchanim are basically loshon hara jack-in-the-boxes and have a similar usefulness in real life. I mean, after setting up enough people and putting enough pressure, they eventually manage to get some people married. I guess that's about as effective as a broken clock, but hey, if it keeps the singles pool large and ensures protectionism in the industry, that's the smartest way to ensure a continued monopoly!
But yeah, rarely does such brilliance grace the pages of COL, especially written by a person and not ChatGPT. So yeah, as Chana courageously says, "pretend there were no shadchanim" and actually do the work yourselves. Stop hiding behind these destructive constructs which prevent marriage in our communities. Date. Ask out. Communicate. Be an adult. I know it sounds crazy, but I promise, you'll be happier not being infantilized at the end of the day. Speaking of that, Chana, wanna go out on a date?
